Colonoscopy Information and Bowel Preparation Instructions
Please follow the correct instructions according to when your examination is booked to ensure your bowel is prepared correctly.
1 Instruction Sheet for MORNING Colonoscopy (Preparation = Picolax x3 Sachet Doses)
2 Instruction Sheet for AFTERNOON Colonoscopy (Preparation = Durolax x2 tablets & Picolax x2 Sachet Doses)
3 Instruction Sheet for Colonoscopy Special Preparation/Poor tolerance Picolax (Preparation = Durolax x8 tablets)
| Please Note: the success of your colonoscopy will depend on your large bowel being as clear as possible. If your bowel is not clear, the colonoscopy may not be completed and may need to be repeated at a later date. |

Bowel Preparation Kits are available from G I Health or the Hospital at least 2 days prior to your examination at a cost of $20 per kit

Below are the Bowel Preparations instructions for Colonoscopy procedures when performed in the morning and in the afternoon.
For a Morning Colonoscopy:
CLEAR FLUIDS MEANS: water, apple juice, tea and coffee without milk, clear fruit cordial (not red coloured) clear soups or broth. Avoid Milk.
FASTING MEANS: Nothing more to be taken by mouth until after your procedure.
ONE DAY BEFORE THE EXAMINATION MORNING:
• Eat breakfast, and then cease eating any solid foods. • Commence clear fluid s following breakfast until after the procedure.
MID AFTERNOON- 3-3:30PM: FIRST DOSE • Mix a sachet of PICOLAX in a glass of water (250 mls), stir until dissolved then drink. • It is important you drink at least 4 glasses of water or clear fluid after drinking the Picolax (over the next hour).
EVENING- 5:30PM: SECOND DOSE • Mix a sachet of PICOLAX in a glass of water (250 mls), stir until dissolved then drink. • It is important you drink at least 4 glasses of water or clear fluid after drinking the Picolax (over the next hour).
EVENING- 7-7:30PM: THIRD DOSE • Mix another sachet of PICOLAX in a glass of water (250 mls) and stir until dissolved then drink. • It is important you drink at least 4 glasses of water or clear fluid after drinking the Picolax (over the next hour).
FAST FROM MIDNIGHT
For an Afternoon Colonoscopy:
CLEAR FLUIDS MEANS: water, apple juice, tea and coffee without milk, clear fruit cordial (not red coloured) clear soups or broth. Avoid Milk.
FASTING MEANS: Nothing more to be taken by mouth until after your procedure.
ONE DAY BEFORE THE EXAMINATION MORNING & LUNCH TIME: • Eat breakfast and normal lunch, and then cease eating any solid foods. • Commence clear fluids following lunch until after the procedure.
LATE AFTERNOON -5:00PM: • TAKE 2 DUROLAX TABLETS. • It is important you drink at least 4 glasses of water or clear fluid throughout the evening.
ON THE MORNING OF THE PROCEDURE- 7:00AM: • Mix a sachet of PICOLAX in a glass of water (250 mls), stir until dissolved then drink. • It is important you drink at least 4 glasses of water or clear fluid after drinking the Picolax (over the next hour).
ON THE MORNING OF THE PROCEDURE- 8:30AM: • Mix a sachet of PICOLAX in a glass of water (250 mls), stir until dissolved then drink. • It is important you drink at least 4 glasses of water or clear fluid after drinking the Picolax (over the next hour).
FAST AFTER 10:00AM
Important Information:
Medications: Please bring your current medications with you to the hospital. Your usual medications should be taken with a small sip of water on the day of the tests (even though you are fasting). Please advise us if you are taking WARFARIN.
Diabetic patients: Please advise the office when booking if you are a diabetic. Do not take your diabetic medications ie: Hypoglycaemic tablets and Insulin without discussing with your doctor or the hospital when your procedure is booked.
Oral Contraceptives: These may not be effective after bowel preparation, take extra precautions for the rest of the month.
Clothing : Have a short sleeve top or T-Shirt to wear for the procedure. Please leave your jewellery and extra cash at home.
Transport : You will need to arrange for a relative or friend to drive you home after the test. Taxi drivers are unable to accept responsibility for your care on discharge from the hospital.
Accounts: Please bring your Medicare card/Private Health Insurance details with you.
